Best Beaches in Perth, Australia by Victoria

Perth is one of my favourite places in Australia. With pristine, uncrowded beaches and plenty of sunshine, it really is a beach lover’s paradise. There are lots of beaches just a short drive outside of the city, and you can hire a car in Perth with drivenow if you don’t have your own vehicle. Since Perth is located on the West Coast of Australia, you get to see some incredible sunsets over the Indian Ocean as you drive along the coastline. Here are 5 of my favourite beaches in Perth.

Cottesloe Beach

Located roughly halfway between Perth CBD and Fremantle; Cottesloe Beach is a fantastic beach to visit for swimming, surfing, sunbathing and watching ocean sunsets over an ice cold beer. There are various restaurants and cafes and bars along the foreshore which make it an ideal place for breakfast, brunch and beachside dining. Make sure you visit the Ocean Beach Hotel, known as the “OBH” for a Sunday Session!

Scarborough Beach

Scarborough Beach is a long stretch of white sand with regular swell and great waves, making it a firm favourite with surfers and bodyboarders. This beach is also a popular spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing when the breeze picks up. Scarborough is a 20-minute drive northwest of Perth, and is popular with people of all ages. You can cook your own food using the public BBQ facilities or you can dine out in one of the many restaurants and cafes here.

City Beach

City Beach is a pristine, laid-back beach with golden sands just 20 minutes west of Perth city. You can take a stroll along the boardwalk, swim in the ocean or enjoy a picnic on the grassy area next to the sand. This beach is comparatively smaller to the rest of the beaches in Perth and there are limited accommodation options, so you can always stay at nearby Scarborough Beach and drive over.

Sorrento Beach

Sorrento Beach lies 20 minutes northwest of Perth along the sunset coast and is the perfect spot for a relaxing beach day enjoying the white sands and turquoise blue waters. Dining is also within convenient reach thanks to the bustling Hillarys Boat Harbour which boasts a number of restaurants.

Rottnest Island

While in Perth, take the ferry over to Rottnest Island where you can visit The Basin- a beautiful natural pool with crystal clear water and soft white sand. The island is home to the cute furry ‘quokka’; a marsupial that looks like an overgrown rat!

If you’re visiting Perth and you wish to drive to these beaches, the best option is to rent a vehicle. To rent a car click here.
